1 The Pew Research Study uses the following system of classification: the poor (who live on $2 or less daily), low income ($2.01–10), middle income ($10.01–20), upper-middle income ($20.01–50) and high income (more than $50). Pew, thus, defines the middle class as ranging between $10 and $50 a day.

2 In the rest of the essay, when I capitalise the term middle class, I refer to the idea of the Middle Class to distinguish the term from the actual lives and practices of the middle classes.
